COMFORT AND STRENGTH: Empowering women, one flowing garment at a time

For Michelle Smith, owner and designer of Lani Lau Hawaii, fashion is more than fabric—it’s a lifestyle of freedom, femininity, and connection. The brand name, Lani Lau, which translates to “heavenly design,” embodies Michelle’s vision to create comfortable, beautiful clothing inspired by the lush landscapes of Hawaii and her journeys around the world. Her pieces are produced on the island of Bali, home to skilled batik artists and an abundance of vibrant textiles that bring her ideas to life.

As Shop YWCA’s Retail Philanthropy Partner, Michelle has generously donated select brand new pieces to support YWCA’s mission of empowering women and businesses. The set includes really cute rompers and dresses in vibrant colors and her boho-inspired designs are versatile, ideal for a beach day or a night out, making them a perfect blend of sophistication and ease.

Giving back is not new to Michelle. She has traveled extensively, immersing herself in diverse cultures, and lifestyles that fuel her passion.

Lani Lau Hawaii is a woman-powered business, with Michelle employing many women who, like her, balance work and family life. Her commitment to empowering women goes beyond her employees—she’s also a humble supporter of an international birthing center that offers healthcare and education to mothers in Indonesia, an area dear to her heart after years of traveling there. Through her contributions, she helps women on a journey of strength, resilience, and self-discovery, values that resonate deeply with her brand.

As a serial entrepreneur, Michelle’s journey has been rich with experience. Before Lani Lau Hawaii, she owned a furniture business and her first clothing line in Canada. Today, Michelle’s focus is on online and business-to-business sales, supplying retailers across Hawaii and in states such as New York, California, and Florida. She encourages young women to pursue their passion, a driving force in her own success. “Passion brings the energy and excitement needed to keep moving forward,” Michelle said.

As Shop YWCA’s featured Retail Philanthropy Partner, we honor Michelle and her commitment to community and empowerment. As she continues to support causes close to her heart, we look forward to working with her in mentoring the next generation of women entrepreneurs seeking to build a future fueled by passion and purpose.
